About the Date Calculator

A date calculator counts the days between two dates. It handles the awkward parts automatically — varying month lengths and leap years — which is what makes it more reliable than counting on a calendar for anything beyond a few weeks.

The formula

Days = (date₂ − date₁) / 86,400,000 milliseconds

Dates are converted to a millisecond timestamp, subtracted, and divided by the number of milliseconds in a day. This handles month lengths and leap years without special cases.

Understanding your result

The reason to compute rather than count is that months have four different lengths and February changes with the leap year rule. That rule is itself less simple than commonly assumed: years divisible by 4 are leap years, except centuries, except centuries divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year and 1900 was not.

Whether to count the start and end dates is a real ambiguity, not a rounding question. From the 1st to the 8th is 7 days of elapsed time but 8 calendar days inclusive. Contracts, notice periods, and hospital stays each have their own conventions, and getting the wrong one wrong by a day can matter legally.

Things worth knowing

  • State whether your count is inclusive or exclusive. Legal notice periods and contracts often specify which applies.
  • The leap year rule excludes century years unless divisible by 400 — 2100 will not be a leap year.
  • Business day counts require excluding weekends and holidays, which differ by country and sometimes by region.
  • Daylight saving transitions make some days 23 or 25 hours long, which affects hour-level calculations.
  • For dates before 1582 in Catholic Europe, or much later elsewhere, the Julian to Gregorian calendar switch matters.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count the days between two dates?+

Subtract the earlier date from the later one. Doing it computationally avoids errors from varying month lengths and leap years, which is where manual counting goes wrong.

Should I include both the start and end dates?+

It depends on the purpose. Elapsed time excludes the start date; inclusive counting includes both. From the 1st to the 8th is 7 days elapsed or 8 days inclusive.

How does the leap year rule work?+

Years divisible by 4 are leap years, except century years, except those divisible by 400. So 2024 and 2000 are leap years, but 1900 and 2100 are not.

How do I count business days only?+

Exclude weekends and public holidays from the total. Holidays vary by country and often by region, so a business day count is jurisdiction-specific in a way a calendar day count is not.
