About the Roofing Calculator

A roofing calculator estimates material requirements and cost from roof dimensions and pitch. Pitch matters because a sloped roof has more surface area than its footprint, and ignoring that is the classic way to under-order.

The formula

Roof area = footprint · pitch multiplier; Squares = area / 100

A roofing square is 100 square feet, the standard unit for pricing. The pitch multiplier is √(rise² + 144)/12 — about 1.054 for a 4:12 pitch and 1.25 for 9:12.

Understanding your result

The pitch multiplier converts the horizontal footprint into actual sloped area. A 4:12 pitch adds about 5 percent, while a steep 12:12 adds 41 percent. Estimating from the building footprint alone therefore understates material on any pitched roof, and understates it badly on a steep one.

Pitch also drives labour cost and material choice. Roofs steeper than about 6:12 require additional safety equipment and slow work down considerably, which raises the labour rate. Below 2:12, most shingles are not rated at all and a membrane system is needed instead.

Things worth knowing

  • Roofing is priced per square of 100 square feet, so convert before comparing quotes.
  • Add 10 to 15 percent for waste, more for roofs with many hips, valleys, or dormers.
  • Underlayment, drip edge, ridge vent, flashing, and fasteners are all extra to the shingle count.
  • Most jurisdictions permit two layers of shingles before a full tear-off is required.
  • Steep roofs above 6:12 carry higher labour rates because of the safety equipment and slower pace.
