About the Surface Area Calculator

Understanding your result
The relationship between surface area and volume is the important one, and it changes with size. Area grows with the square of linear dimension while volume grows with the cube, so larger objects have proportionally less surface per unit of volume. This is why small animals lose heat faster than large ones, why crushed ice melts more quickly than a block, and why catalysts are made porous.
For practical estimating, the trick is decomposition. Any complex object can be treated as a set of simpler solids whose areas you sum, minus any faces that are joined and therefore not exposed. Forgetting to exclude hidden faces is the usual source of over-ordering.
Things worth knowing
- Count only exposed faces. A box against a wall does not need that side painted.
- A cylinder's curved surface unrolls to a rectangle 2πr wide by h tall, which makes it easy to visualise.
- A sphere has the smallest surface area of any shape enclosing a given volume, which is why bubbles are round.
- Paint coverage is quoted per unit area, so surface area is the figure to calculate before buying.

Surface area measures the exterior skin in square units; volume measures the space inside in cubic units. One tells you how much paint you need, the other how much the container holds.
