About the Army Body Fat Calculator
This calculator applies the US Army body composition standards, which use circumference measurements to estimate body fat percentage and compare it against age- and sex-specific limits under Army Regulation 600-9. Soldiers who exceed the standard are enrolled in a body composition programme.
The formula
Men: %BF from log₁₀(abdomen − neck) and height; Women add hipMeasurements are taken at specified anatomical landmarks in centimetres. Allowable body fat rises with age band, reflecting normal age-related composition change.
How to use this calculator
- 1Enter your Gender (1=Male, 2=Female). The field starts at
1, which you can overwrite. - 2Enter your Age (Years). The field starts at
25, which you can overwrite. - 3Enter your Height (cm). The field starts at
178, which you can overwrite. - 4Enter your Waist (cm). The field starts at
82, which you can overwrite. - 5Enter your Neck (cm). The field starts at
36, which you can overwrite. - 6Enter your Hip (cm, females only). The field starts at
90, which you can overwrite. - 7Read the result straight away — it recalculates as you type, so there is no button to press. Use Share to copy a link that reopens the page with your exact numbers filled in.

Understanding your result
The Army uses a tape test because it is cheap, portable, and repeatable across thousands of soldiers, not because it is the most accurate method available. It typically falls within a few percentage points of a DEXA scan but can misclassify individuals at the extremes — particularly heavily muscled soldiers with thick necks, where the neck measurement skews the result.
The standards tighten with rank expectations and loosen with age. Because they are administratively consequential, measurement technique is prescribed precisely: specific landmarks, tape tension, and averaging of repeated readings. Small deviations in where the tape sits change the outcome, which is why the regulation is so specific about procedure.
Things worth knowing
- Standards are updated periodically. Check the current version of AR 600-9 rather than relying on remembered figures.
- Neck measurement should be taken at the level of the Adam's apple with the tape sloping slightly downward at the front.
- Abdominal measurement is taken at the navel, horizontal, at the end of a normal exhalation.
- The tape test can penalise very muscular builds. Supplemental body composition assessment may be available.
- Recent Army policy exempts soldiers meeting certain fitness test thresholds from the tape test entirely.
Frequently asked questions
What body fat percentage does the Army allow?+
Limits vary by age and sex, generally ranging from about 20 to 26 percent for men and 30 to 36 percent for women across age bands. Consult the current AR 600-9 for exact figures.
How accurate is the Army tape test?+
Generally within a few percentage points of a DEXA scan, but it can misclassify very muscular individuals. It is designed for cheap, repeatable mass screening rather than precision.
What happens if a soldier exceeds the standard?+
Enrolment in the Army Body Composition Program, with nutrition counselling, monthly reassessment, and potential impact on promotion or retention if the standard is not met within the allowed period.
Can a fitness test exempt me from the tape test?+
Under recent policy, soldiers achieving specified scores on the Army Combat Fitness Test may be exempt from body fat assessment. The applicable thresholds are set by current regulation.
